June 2010

You heard it here first:  InVenture is coming to North America!  Our Mexico pilot kicks off on July 5th, thanks to the hard work of our new InVenture Fellows and the generous support of MIT’s Public Service Center.  Our microequity model was a success in Ghana, India, and Mali, and we’re ready to put our vision to work on the ground in Mexico.  But we can’t do it without your help!

InVenture will be hosting a series of happy hour fundraisers in 4 cities this month, starting tomorrow, June 11th, in Washington DC! Three additional events will be held June 18 in both New York City and Los Angeles; and June 25 in San Francisco.  All proceeds will go directly to our Mexico pilot, in order to help businesses here achieve the same high-impact results as our businesses in Ghana, India, and Mali. Even a small donation can make a big difference, so if you can’t attend the fundraisers, visit our invest page to make your contribution today!

Read on for more news on our Pilots, Fellows, and summer happenings.

Pilot Programs Success Stories

Here are some numbers we can all be proud of:  In just 6 months, InVenture has invested in 35 entrepreneurs in 3 countries.  That’s 35 micro and small business owners who got the opportunity to expand their businesses, move towards financial independence, and make positive changes in their communities. Not only that, but each entrepreneur has paid back his/her original principal, is meeting returns of 15% or higher, and is reinvesting in local social causes like public health and vocational training for school girls.

Where will we be in another 6 months?  That depends on you!

Our pilot funds will wrap up at the end of June, and we’ll be moving into our second investment cycle with new goals and new tools. Stay tuned to find out what's next!

To learn more about how our pilots work and what we do, check out our How We Work page on our site, or our recent blog postings. You can also learn more about our entrepreneurs in Mexico and start investing in them directly by going to our invest page. We'll be updating our website in the next few weeks to include more info, so keep visiting!

InVenture in Action

The month of May kept us busy with conferences, connections, and other events.  Highlights include:
  • Social Enterprise Tuesdays! (Los Angeles).  Our weekly Tuesday gatherings have provided space for good conversation about social ventures and new opportunities for collaboration.  So far we have had amazing orgs like Kito International, Terra Shift, Startingbloc, Philanthro Productions, Whatgives, and Causecast all attend the events. If you're interested in social enterprise, volunteers, or simply meeting new friends in LA, come out and join us! To find out more info, email us at info@inventurefund.org, or continue to visit our Facebook page for updates.
  • Microfinance USA 2010 Conference (San Francisco).  InVenture represented in a big way! We connected with friends old and new and explored options and improvements for our existing pilot funds.  We also learned a lot about the U.S. microfinance scene and are currently seeking partners for our first domestic pilot—stay tuned for more information on this exciting venture!
  • Drink Me’s Party for Good Event (San Francisco).  More than 200 people came out to discuss new innovations in philanthropy over Fair Trade Certified spirits.   Special thanks to Drink Me Magazine for featuring InVenture, as well as our partnering sponsors Oikocredit, Sparkseed, One Percent Foundation, and Citizen Effect for a great night of collaboration and celebration!
  • Summer of Microfinance Kickoff (San Francisco). SF’s Coda Lounge and sponsors Oikocredit ran an amazing event to jumpstart a grassroots campaign for economic justice.
We’re also grateful to our friends in social media for helping spread the word about our cause:
  • EnvisionGood produced two incredible interviews with our CEO Shivani Siroya, which you can now watch on our new channel, InVenture TV.
  • ThinkChange India published this piece about our fund and mission.
  • Professor Chowdhry of UCLA's Anderson School mentioned InVenture in this Huffington Post piece about microequity.
Finally, we recently shot our second branding video, thanks to Adam Barton of Native Resonance!  Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes footage!

At our launch event in March, our partners at Project Muso reminded us why we’re involved with InVenture:  because a little really does go a long way towards enacting social change.  Back in February, InVenture partnered with Project Muso to invest in a women’s business cooperative in Mali.  In just over one month, that cooperative has increased revenues and funded health care for five members of their community for an entire year—and all with just 5% of profits, or a little less than 45 USD.

You can read more updates on Project Muso and the rest of our pilot projects below, but in the meantime, we want to say a big thank you to everyone who came out for our launch event!  More than 200 of you packed NYC’s Arlo & Esme for a night of friends, fundraising, and inspiration.  For those of you who missed it, highlights included speeches from our partners KeyCredit MicroFinance and Project Muso, and the unveiling of our online community and investment platform. We also premiered our very first promotional video, which you can now watch at www.inventurefund.org.  Many thanks to our good friends Adam Barton (nativeresonance.com), Amelia Rasche, and Takis Simon for their excellent work in producing this project, and Ari Brand for starring in it. Be sure to check out some more of the event's highlights on our blog as well as Facebook page.

We have been working hard since our last newsletter and have a lot to tell you!  Read on to see what we've been up to.

InVenture in Action
Conferences, Volunteers, and Partnerships

While our supporters keep the momentum going on the ground, the InVenture team is spreading the word about our cause at conferences, social entrepreneurship mixers, and other events.  In case you were wondering how we spend our free time, here are some InVenture highlights from the past month:
We are also excited to announce a new partnership with Transparency Solutions. While the microfinance industry has come under fire recently for corrupt lending practices, we believe that, in the right hands—and with the right partners—microfinance can be a source of empowerment and a means to self-sufficiency.  Our funds put business owners first, and partners like Transparency Solutions will help us increase our impact, accountability, and transparency on the ground, further renewing our commitment to openness.

The Numbers Are In
An Update on our Pilot Programs

InVenture has started to measure the impact of our first pilot programs in Ghana, India, and Mali.  But before we get to the results, check out how the model works:

You can also visit the How It Works page on our website to learn about the process.

In Ghana, we’ve invested in two small business owners, and the pilot program will wrap up in June.  Our entrepreneurs are on track to achieve their baseline targets of 20% profits and have already returned most of their original principle.  5% of their profits will go to girls’ education and vocational training.

In India, where our pilot will run until mid-July, we’ve invested in three businesses that have already paid back their principle and are hitting their targets of 15% returns. Reinvestments here will go to vocational training and water filtration or preventative care.

And in Mali, we invested in a women’s business cooperative that creates textiles from Bogolan cloth. The cooperative, in turn, is reinvesting 5% of profits in a community health clinic run by our partner, Project Muso.

Our Mexico pilot will kick off this summer, thanks to the hard work and extensive research from our first InVenture Fellows—Manvi  Goel and Sarina Saddhanti of MIT. We are extremely excited to have them on board with us this summer and look forward to working with them on this pilot.

We also want to thank our newest contributors: Jen Chong, Theresa Dunbar, Tamer Farooqui, Lisa Kant, Michael Lazar, Selina Tirtajana, and Emily. Wengel. Welcome aboard!

When we started InVenture Fund last year, we had a simple goal:  to create an easy way for everyday people to invest in ground-up social change.  The rest, of course, has taken a bit more time.  We’ve reviewed models, tweaked our game plan, and tested ideas with industry experts. We then launched pilot funds and started to measure our real-world impact.  In the process, we’ve grown and changed—and so has our look!

Many thanks to designer extraordinaire Anna Pasquale for creating this fresh new logo.  Shivani Siroya, our founder & CEO, says of the design:  “The dandelion represents our social reinvestment philosophy. Each investment is a seed that can grow a new business and build a better community.”

Read on to see what else we’ve been up to—including new board members, a new pilot fund, and a party to celebrate it all.

What does it mean to InVest in Good?
In-Pilot Launch Party this Thursday in NYC

To help answer this question, InV is inviting YOU to our In-Pilot Party on Thursday, March 25th at Arlo & Esme in New York City.  We’ve been working hard to make this event a success, and now we need your support!  So stop by from 6-9 p.m. and say hello to the InVenture team, our newest board members, and representatives from our business partnerships.  Sign up for our InVestor Community.  Make new friends with other socially conscious citizens and entrepreneurs.  Watch some fascinating new videos about the InVenture model.   Sip on InVenture’s signature cocktail.  Most importantly, help us celebrate the launch of our newest pilot funds and partnerships, and learn just how easy it is to inspire real, sustainable change in developing communities. Be sure to click on the invitation for more info!

InVesting in Good is Just a Few Clicks Away
InVenture's Online InVestment Platform

As part of our commitment to full transparency, InVenture is also in the process of redesigning our website.  We want you to know exactly where your money is going and who it’s helping!  On March 25th, the first iteration of our online investment and fundraising platform will be unveiled—making it fully possible for YOU to start investing in our funds.  Remember:  a little investment goes a long way towards helping these businesses grow.

If you’re not ready to become an InVestor yet, you can donate to InVenture itself.  Your donation will help us develop additional pilot funds, refine our online financial tools and website, and so much more!

Our Newest Partnership
Project Muso Ladamunen

InVenture has teamed up with Project Muso in Bamako, Mali to invest in a women’s business cooperative.  The cooperative’s goods—textiles made from Mali Bogolan Mudcloth—will be for sale this Thursday at our event, so please come prepared to support our newest partner!  And, here's the best part: The cooperative reinvests 5% of its profits in a local health clinic, so your purchase helps the community, too.

This is the InVenture model in action:  investing in businesses that reinvest in their communities.  The logic is simple.  The impact is extraordinary.

Welcome to InVenture Fund! We're excited to have your support. Just by reading this newsletter, you're helping us build a community of socially conscious investors and entrepreneurs all committed to real, sustainable change.

Many of you have heard a lot about InVenture over the past few months, but for those of you who haven't: InVenture Fund connects developing businesses with the capital and training they need to escape the cycles of debt and poverty. By expanding on traditional microfinance models, InVenture Fund empowers businesses to do more for themselves and their communities. Here's why InVenture is different:

  • InVenture provides long-term capital rather than debt-based loans
  • InVenture partners with practiced NGOs to train entrepreneurs for business success
  • InVenture enables sustainable, ground-up change by requiring businesses to reinvest in their communities
  • InVenture provides a way for your dollars to do more and gives you the opportunity to reinvest in the causes you care about most
  • And finally, InVenture's online investment platform is completely transparent — when you invest with us, you'll know where each and every dollar is going

The InVenture Team has been working hard over the past few months to get our organization up and running — from launching our first pilot funds to filming promotional videos to planning our official debut. Learn about some of our progress below, and don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr (if you're not already!). We hope you'll stick with us as we continue to work towards our goal of building viable, socially conscious businesses that give back to their communities.

Our Pilot Programs in Ghana & India

The First Real-World Test of our Mission

InVenture has partnered with KeyCredit Microfinance in Accra, Ghana and the Green Microfinance Company in Tamil Nadu, India, to launch capital investment programs. Both organizations have several years' experience in the micro-lending market, hundreds of clients, and a demonstrated need for growth. In addition to improving the local marketplace and helping these businesses to expand, our pilot funds will allow us to test all aspects of the InVenture model before we go live later this year. We'll also be measuring the impact of our investments on the local community to demonstrate just how far our funds can reach. By the time you're ready to start investing with us, we'll be able to show you how every cent of every dollar you invest is being put to work for the InVenture mission.

InV Debut!
Official Launch Party & Fundraiser

InVenture is coming to the Big Apple in a very Big Way. Join us at our first official launch party on Thursday, March 25, at Arlo & Esme in New York City. Learn all you ever wanted to know about the way InVenture is changing the face of global microfinance, and get some awesome InVenture gear to show your friends! Most importantly, celebrate the launch of our fund with the InVenture team and other like-minded InVestors and individuals!

Our Growing Global Network
How to Get Involved

You don't have to be an InVestor (not yet, anyway!) to help InVenture's mission. Just by spreading the word about InVenture to your friends and colleagues you can build support for our cause. Tell your friends why microloans aren't enough to get communities out of poverty — and how financial and educational investments can help. Or explain to your coworkers how our social reinvestment strategy helps to build a thriving local marketplace. And get involved in the conversation — we want to know what you think!

Thanks for reading (and reaching the bottom)! Be sure to visit our our website (InVentureFund.org) to find out more about us and how we work — it's a work in progress, but there is tons of info for you to check out!  And stay tuned in the coming weeks for more updates. We've worked hard to get InVenture off the ground, but now we need YOU to keep the energy going. Follow us on Facebook, comment on our blog and tweets...and tell your friends and colleagues about us, too! Help us build a global community of investors and supporters that has a real shot at lasting change. We're ready to make our mark on the world, but we can't do it without you!

Sincerely,
The InVenture Team
(Shivani, Bonnie, Soni, Lauren, Saleh, Bailey, Sheena & Caroline)
